Is there a dopamine test?

Short answer: not one you can take at home. No blood test, saliva kit or quiz tells you how much dopamine your brain is using. What you can check is how your days are balanced between the habits that tend to flatten reward and the ones that tend to restore it. That's what the audit below does.

What researchers actually measure

In labs, dopamine activity in the brain is estimated with brain-imaging methods such as PET scans, and in animal studies with probes placed directly in brain tissue. Dopamine in blood or urine mostly reflects what the body is doing elsewhere; it doesn't cross into the brain, so it says very little about motivation or enjoyment.

So when an app or a supplement brand offers to "test your dopamine", it's measuring something else and calling it dopamine.

What a self-reported check can tell you

The useful question isn't "how much dopamine do I have?" It's "which of my habits are pulling my reward baseline down, and which one would move it most if I changed it?" That's answerable from things you already know: screen time, scrolling in bed, morning daylight, movement, sleep, focused work and time with people.

  • Five questions on drains: feeds, late-night scrolling, phone at wake-up, quick hits, sugar and caffeine.
  • Five on restores: daylight, movement, sleep, deep focus, real-life time with people.
  • Two on how things feel right now.

You get one number, your top drain, and the restore most likely to shift it. It's a self-reported index, not a measurement of dopamine and not medical advice.
