If you searched something like this, you probably weren't looking for neuroscience. You were looking for a reason.
Things you used to like are just events now. The music plays and it's sound. You do the thing that used to work and it doesn't. The most unsettling part usually isn't sadness — it's the flatness, and the suspicion that something in you has been quietly turned down.
Two things are worth saying, and the order matters.
First: this is a real phenomenon with a real mechanism
The flatness isn't imagined and it isn't laziness.
In the reward literature, the relevant idea is allostasis. George Koob and Michel Le Moal described how the processes that normally hold reward function inside a stable range can, under sustained load, stop returning to that range. The system re-stabilizes somewhere lower. They called it a chronic deviation of the reward setpoint.
The important word is setpoint. Not a level that drained — a baseline that moved.
That distinction explains the texture of the experience. It's not that you're empty and one good day would refill you. It's that the floor you stand on has shifted, so everything measured against it reads lower. Good things still happen. They just land against a different reference point.
It also explains why it crept up on you. Setpoints move slowly, and you can't notice a reference point moving by consulting the reference point.
Second: some of this is load you can name
Not all of it, and possibly not most of it. But some.
The load that moves a setpoint isn't only "too much fun." A few contributors are consistently underweighted:
Sleep. The most reliable and least interesting answer. Sleep deprivation is associated with downregulation of striatal dopamine receptors. If sleep has been poor for weeks, that alone can flatten things, and no amount of behavioural cleverness compensates for it.
Unpredictable, frequent reward. Variable-ratio schedules — the structure of feeds, notifications, refreshing anything — train the system hardest. Frequency does more damage than intensity. Forty small unremarkable hits cost more than one memorable one.
Effortless reward. Rewards that arrive with no work in front of them appear to behave differently from ones you had to climb toward. Work from Salamone and colleagues put dopamine on the effort axis rather than the pleasure axis. A day made entirely of frictionless input is not a neutral day.
Chronic stress. The allostasis account explicitly involves recruited stress systems, not just reward circuitry. Sustained stress is part of the load, not a separate topic.
None of that is a protocol and none of it is a cure. It's a list of variables that are usually invisible and are sometimes movable.
What actually helps, in the honest version
Not a detox. The reasoning behind dopamine detox doesn't hold up, and its central instruction — remove all sources of reward — adds load to a system already carrying too much. If your baseline is already low, austerity is not the fix.
What the model suggests instead is unglamorous. Protect sleep first, because everything else is downstream. Make one frequent unpredictable reward predictable — one, not all of them. Put a little effort in front of something you'd otherwise get for free. And expect the timescale to be weeks, because a setpoint that moved over months doesn't move back over a weekend.
Slow is not failure here. Slow is the mechanism.
The part where I stop being useful
Persistent loss of enjoyment is also a recognised clinical symptom. It's called anhedonia, and it's a core feature of depression, as well as appearing in other conditions and as a side effect of some medications.
There is no reliable way to tell from the inside whether what you're experiencing is a loaded reward system or something that needs treatment. They feel similar. A tracker cannot distinguish them, and neither can an article.
So: if the flatness has lasted more than a couple of weeks, if it covers everything rather than specific things, or if it comes with hopelessness, changes in sleep or appetite, or thoughts of hurting yourself — please talk to a doctor or a mental health professional.
